Hakuoh University Defeats Peking University to Reach Semifinals; Wang Zhipeng Injured, Angsaer Scores 30

August 22 — In the second quarterfinal of the inaugural Asian University Basketball League (AUBL), Peking University faced Hakuoh University. Peking University lost two key starters, Wang Haolin and Wang Zhipeng, to injury, with Wang Zhipeng exiting the game less than nine minutes in. Peking University then suffered a 14-0 run in the second quarter and trailed 29–41 at halftime. The deficit widened to over 20 points in the second half, and they ultimately fell 71–91 to Hakuoh University. With the win, Hakuoh University advances to the semifinals, where they will meet the winner between Tsinghua University and Konkuk University.

Game Recap

Peking University went 2–0 in the group stage to finish first in Group A, while Hakuoh University went 1–1 to finish second in Group B.

  • First Quarter: Eijiro Ogawa hit the opening three, but Angsaer Muheyati and Wang Zhipeng each scored 4 points in an 8–0 run to give PKU the lead. Hakuoh responded with a 7–0 run. Deng Yihao scored 4 straight on fast breaks to retake the lead. With the score tied at 12–12, Wang Zhipeng slipped and left the game injured. Angsaer added 5 more points, and PKU led 17–12 after the first. Angsaer had 9 points and 3 assists in the quarter.
  • Second Quarter: Monga Banza Joel threw down a dunk, but PKU extended their lead to 6. Hakuoh then attacked inside for a 9–0 run to go up by 3. Chen Shiyu and Deng Yihao tied the game at 23–23. Angsaer answered a Hakuoh basket with a three, but Eijiro Ogawa sparked a 14–0 Hakuoh run that pushed the lead to 13. Zhang Baowen’s and-one briefly stopped the drought, but Hakuoh extended the margin again. PKU lost the quarter 12–29 and trailed 29–41 at the half. At halftime, Angsaer had 14 points and 4 assists, while Ogawa had 10 points.
  • Third Quarter: Hakuoh started with a 7–0 run to push the lead to 19. Liu Shengqi and Angsaer hit back-to-back baskets, but Ryosuke Saeki answered with a three. Angsaer hit another triple and blocked Saeki, but Hakuoh kept scoring to maintain an 18-point lead. Zhang Baowen and Angsaer cut into the gap, but Monga Banza Joel scored repeatedly to steady Hakuoh. By the end of the third, PKU trailed 49–67. After three quarters, Angsaer had 23 and Zhang Baowen 11; Hakuoh had three players in double figures.
  • Fourth Quarter: Down 18, PKU opened with a 7–2 run, including Angsaer’s fifth three-pointer, trimming it to 15. But Hakuoh quickly pushed it back to 18. Angsaer reached 30 points, but Hakuoh steadily built the lead beyond 20. PKU was unable to mount a comeback, and the game ended with a 91–71 Hakuoh win.
