Hakuoh University Outlasts Etugen to Claim Third Place; Baatar-Erdene Drops 30 in Defeat

August 24 — In the bronze-medal game of the inaugural Asian University Basketball League (AUBL), Hakuoh University held off a late rally from Etugen University to secure a 90–86 victory. Hakuoh built a 14-point advantage in the third quarter, withstood Etugen’s furious comeback that cut the deficit to one in the final period, and closed out the contest at the free throw line. With the win, Hakuoh clinched third place, while Etugen finished fourth.

Game Recap

  • First Quarter: Hakuoh trailed early as Usukhbayar Otgonbayar scored three straight inside baskets, but Monga Banza Joel’s 2+1 and Eijiro Ogawa’s perimeter shooting quickly flipped momentum. Barsbold Baatar-Erdene and Binderiya Sandagdorj kept Etugen in touch, but Hakuoh’s balanced offense carried them to a 28–24 edge after the first quarter.
  • Second Quarter: The second quarter saw Binderiya Sandagdorj push Etugen back into the game with relentless drives, trimming the deficit to 34–34. However, Ogawa steadied Hakuoh with timely buckets, while Ryusei Sato provided perimeter scoring. At halftime, Hakuoh led 49–41.
  • Third Quarter: Etugen opened with a 7–2 run to cut it to three, but Ogawa and Haruki Naito sparked a 10–0 Hakuoh surge that stretched the gap to 14. Baatar-Erdene, already over 20 points, kept Etugen alive, yet Hakuoh entered the fourth with a 69–57 lead.
  • Fourth Quarter: Etugen stormed back in the final quarter, led by Baatar-Erdene’s hot shooting and Tushig Elbeg’s back-to-back threes, narrowing the margin to just one. But Hakuoh responded through Ogawa’s aggressive attacks and Joel’s inside presence to restore breathing room. Despite more late threes from Baatar-Erdene and Elbeg, Hakuoh held firm from the foul line to close out the 90–86 win.
