AUBL Group Stage Recap: 4 Teams Stay Perfect, Tsinghua and Peking Lead the Quarterfinals
Beijing time, August 20 — After three days of group stage competition, the inaugural Asian University Basketball League (AUBL) has produced its quarterfinal lineup. Four teams remain undefeated: Peking University (Group A), Tsinghua University (Group B), Yonsei University (Group C), and National Chengchi University (Group D).
The quarterfinal matchups are:
- Peking University vs. Hakuoh University
- Konkuk University vs. Tsinghua University
- Yonsei University vs. Etugen University
- Shanghai Jiao Tong University vs. National Chengchi University
Group Stage Overview
The first AUBL, organized by the Asian University Sports Federation, featured 12 teams:
- China: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Taiyuan University of Technology
- Korea: Yonsei University, Konkuk University
- Japan: Hakuoh University, Nippon Sport Science University
- Mongolia: Etugen University
- Hong Kong: The University of Hong Kong
- Taiwan: National Chengchi University
The 12 teams were divided into 4 groups of 3. After 3 days of play, the top 2 teams in each group advanced to the knockout stage. The advancing teams are: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Yonsei University, Konkuk University, Hakuoh University, National Chengchi University, and Etugen University.

Group A
- Peking University (2–0)
- Konkuk University (1–1)
- Zhejiang University (0–2)
Peking University dominated Group A, opening with a 79–69 win over Konkuk before cruising past Zhejiang 84–70. Wang Zhipeng was the standout performer, posting 29 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocks in Game 1, followed by 25 points and 4 assists in Game 2 — back-to-back 25+ point outings.
Group B
- Tsinghua University (2–0)
- Hakuoh University (1–1)
- The University of Hong Kong (0–2)
Tsinghua controlled Group B, routing HKU 98–55 in the opener before edging Hakuoh 88–82. Xi Taicheng led the way, recording 15 points and 9 rebounds in Game 1, then 20 points and 11 rebounds in Game 2, topping his team in both scoring and rebounding across both games.
Group C
- Yonsei University (2–0)
- Shanghai Jiao Tong University (1–1)
- Taiyuan University of Technology (0–2)
Yonsei edged two strong CUBAL teams, beating SJTU 74–72 and Taiyuan Tech 69–66. Lee Juyoung shone brightest, with 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 steals in the opener, followed by 20 points and 7 assists in the second. His play powered Yonsei to two narrow but crucial wins.
Group D
- National Chengchi University (2–0)
- Etugen University (1–1)
- Nippon Sport Science University (0–2)
NCCU outlasted Etugen 90–79 in OT, then rolled past Nippon Sport Science 96–73. Song Xin-hao looked MVP-caliber, tallying 18 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists, and 4 steals in Game 1, before adding 23 points and 7 rebounds in Game 2. He proved to be the team’s most reliable two-way presence.
Quarterfinal Outlook (August 22)
- 11:30 — National Chengchi University vs. Shanghai Jiao Tong University
- 14:00 — Peking University vs. Hakuoh University
- 17:00 — Yonsei University vs. Etugen University
- 19:30 — Tsinghua University vs. Konkuk University
Matchup notes:
- Peking University vs. Hakuoh University — Peking will need to tighten its defense, as Hakuoh poured in 199 points across two games, the group stage’s top offense.
- Tsinghua University vs. Konkuk University — Tsinghua’s balance on both ends gives it the edge.
- Yonsei University vs. Etugen University — A closer matchup, with Etugen’s physicality capable of swinging the game either way.
- National Chengchi University vs. Shanghai Jiao Tong University — NCCU looks stronger overall, led by its steady star, while SJTU must lock down defensively to have a chance.
